Do not send sensitive case details through this website
Submitting the case review form does not create an attorney-client relationship, and information you send before the firm agrees to represent you may not be protected by the attorney-client privilege. Send only enough to let the firm work out whether it can help. If your matter is urgent or sensitive, call (214) 526-0555 instead. See the legal disclaimer.
This policy covers www.barrettcrimelaw.com, operated by Peter Barrett Criminal Defense, 3500 Maple Ave, Suite 550, Dallas, Texas 75219. It describes what this website actually does. It does not cover how the firm handles client files once it represents you, which is governed by the engagement agreement and by the firm's professional obligations.
What this site collects
Information you type into the case review form. The form asks for your name, phone number, email address, the county your case is in, the type of charge, the current stage of your case, and a free-text message. Every one of those is optional to the extent you choose what to put in them, except that the form will not submit without the fields marked required and without ticking the acknowledgement box.
Technical information recorded with your submission. When the form is submitted, the site also records your IP address, your browser user agent string, the page the form was sent from, and the date and time. This is stored alongside the rest of your enquiry.
Server logs. The web host keeps standard access logs of requests to the site, which include IP addresses, and the firm's security provider processes requests in front of the site.
Analytics. The site runs Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-88H01HHJBC). It sets first-party cookies in your browser, normally named _ga and _ga_ followed by the property identifier, and reports on pages viewed, approximate location, device and how people arrive at the site. The firm uses it in aggregate, to understand which pages are useful.
What this site does not do
- It does not sell personal information, and it does not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- It does not run advertising, remarketing or profiling cookies, and there is no advertising pixel on any page.
- It does not ask you to create an account, and it stores no passwords.
- It does not take payments through the website.
If that changes, for example if the firm begins advertising online and adds conversion or remarketing tags, this page will be updated before those tags go live.
Why it is collected
- To read your enquiry, work out whether the firm can help, and reply by phone or email.
- To run the conflict check that professional rules require before the firm can take a matter.
- To keep a record of enquiries received, consistent with the firm's professional and record-keeping obligations.
- To keep the form working and resist abuse. The site uses a hidden field, a timing check, a per-IP rate limit and a Cloudflare Turnstile challenge to filter automated submissions. The rate limit stores a one-way hash of the IP address rather than the address itself.
- To understand, in aggregate, how the site is used.
Who else handles it
The firm uses a small number of service providers. Each one receives information only so the site can function, and each is bound by its own terms.
| Provider | What it handles |
|---|---|
| GoDaddy | Hosts the website and stores the enquiry records and server access logs. |
| Cloudflare | Sits in front of the site for delivery and security, so it processes requests including IP addresses. It also provides the Turnstile anti-spam challenge on the form. |
| Mailgun | Delivers the enquiry to the firm by email. |
| Provides Analytics, and serves the fonts used on the site. Loading those fonts means Google receives your IP address and the page you are on. |
Beyond that, the firm discloses information only where it is required to by law, a court order or a binding request from a public authority, or where it is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.
Where enquiries are stored, and how
Enquiries are transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) and written to storage that sits outside the public area of the web server, with file permissions restricted to the account that runs the site. A copy is emailed to the firm. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, which is the reason for the notice at the top of this page.
How long it is kept
Enquiry records are kept for as long as they are needed for the purposes described above and to meet the firm's professional and legal record-keeping obligations, after which they are deleted. Analytics data is kept according to the retention period set in the analytics property. If you want your enquiry deleted sooner, ask, and the firm will delete it unless it is required to keep it.
Your choices
- Ask what is held about you, or ask for it to be corrected or deleted. Contact the firm using the details below. The firm will need enough information to find your record and to be satisfied of who you are.
- Opt out of analytics. Install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works normally either way.
- Choose a different channel. Nothing requires you to use the form. Calling (214) 526-0555 leaves no web record of your enquiry.
Texas residents have rights over personal data under Texas law, and residents of other states may have rights under their own. The firm will honour a request of this kind regardless of which law applies to it, to the extent it is able to and consistent with its professional obligations. Nothing here is a statement about which privacy statutes apply to the firm.
Children
This site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. The firm does not knowingly collect information from a child under 13 through this website. If you believe a child has submitted information here, contact the firm and it will be deleted.
Changes to this policy
If the way this site handles information changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it. Material changes will be reflected here before the new practice begins.
